Son of a Gamblin’ Man: Identity on the Plains
March 25-27, 2010
Son of a Gamblin’ Man is not only the story of Robert Henri, but also of identity. By looking at Sandoz’ works as study of identity in the West, attendees will be able to better understand her, Henri, and the times of which she writes. The conference planning committee is interested in the wonderful interdisciplinary opportunities that are associated with this conference theme. These areas include, but are not limited to, Psychology, Art, and Communications in the exploration of identity and expression. For more information, please contact us.
Mari Sandoz and the Joy of Learning with a special exhibition of archival documents from the Collection – 2011
The theme for 2011 ties in with the centennial celebration of Chadron State College’s founding. Mari Sandoz attended a few classes at Chadron Normal School to get her teaching certification and her love of learning was evident throughout her life. She fought her way into the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, taught summer institutes in Wisconsin, and attended courses to help for her research. In other words, she always wanted to learn and understand. Through her books, These were the Sioux and Cheyenne Autumn, she wanted the greater world to understand the Native Americans/American Indians as she knew them. She wanted to help young writers develop and grow and her work with the Prairie Schooner and University of Nebraska Press/Bison Books is a direct reflection of that desire.
